NEW HAVEN TAX COLLECTOR WARNS: WITH LIENS SCHEDULED TO BE APPLIED ON APRIL 6TH, RESIDENTS SHOULD MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO PAY DELINQUENCIES IMMEDIATELY

(3/18/2009) NEW HAVEN—The Tax Collector for the City of New Haven issued a warning today to the nearly 3,500 tax scofflaws in the City: “pay-up or face a lien in the next few weeks”. On April 6th, the Office of the Tax Collector will lien all delinquent real estate. Currently there are 3,446 delinquent properties with over $6.5 million owed in back taxes.

In the area of personal property, 683 accounts remain delinquent with over $700,000 owed to the City. As of April 6th, 2009 the Tax Collector will issue Alias Property Tax Warrants and enforce collection of these delinquent personal property tax bills. At that time, the Tax Collector will also file a lien with the Secretary of State for all unpaid business personal Property taxes.

There are over 10,500 motor vehicle tax bills outstanding in New Haven amounting to $1.8 million that were due July 1, 2008 and January 1, 2009. “We don’t want to have to issue a single lien but it’s everyone’s responsibility to pay their share,” said C.J. Cuticello, Tax Collector. “As we’ve said again and again, if everyone pays their share, everyone pays less. It isn’t fair to the responsible tax payer that someone else get away with not paying what they owe. The City depends on these revenues to provide services so we’re aggressive in our efforts to collect.”

Cuticello continues to utilize the PlateHunter and VioAlert to enforce collection of the delinquent taxes and parking tickets.
